Falling Asleep to...Murder

I know for a fact it's not just me! I've had so many conversations with people about this freakish habit. One of those things you don't like to talk about because you're not sure people will understand. Or worse yet, they'll judge you and decide you're a, well, freak! Judge away people! For as long as I can remember I've watched true crime documentaries at night to fall asleep. It started way before it was as easily accessible as it is now thanks to streaming apps. I used to have to search the channels in hopes of finding Forensic Files or Snapped. If I was able to find one I would even text my sister (who was my roommate down the hall) what channel I found the show on! It was like winning the lottery! So here's the thing. It's not the fact that someone documenting a murder bores me to sleep. I actually am fascinated by all the methods available to solve a crime. It's insane and way over my head the resources available to do this! And I'm reassured by how difficult it is to get away with gruesome offenses - that helps me sleep! But it's the voice. Obviously they cast these shows appropriately with the perfect narrator. Those modulated tones that are so pleasant to listen to. They lull me to sleep. This morning when my husband had to leave at 3:30am and I woke up, I turned on the TV and found a show about murder so I could go back to sleep. It just works for me. It gets even weirder, though. If I can't sleep I also watch true crime. I could stay awake binging these documentaries all day and night! And to be honest, most of the stories they are telling I've heard before. Maybe on a different forum, though, so hearing an alternative take on it is captivating. When my daughter was old enough we would even watch the shows together on our mother-daughter trips! We would settle in to our hotel and find the channel showing Forensic Files to watch in bed. When she discovered true crime podcasts she turned me on to those, which I'm now completely addicted to! No TV? No problem, Dateline is a podcast now too! My favorite, though, is Crime Junkie. If you haven't checked out this podcast I highly recommend it! If you're into true crime like the rest of the world, that is. Or it's just me? I know it's not! Anyways, the crime podcast trend is great for road trips. You would think it would make me sleepy on a long drive since these are my chosen nursery rhymes at night, but it's not the case! I love to listen to crime while driving. The anticipation of finding out who did it keeps me alert! What are the chances?! Now you know about my strange habit. I listen to true crime every chance I get but especially at night so I can fall asleep.
I'll end with a funny story. One of the times my husband and I were meeting with our Financial Advisor she wanted to discuss our life insurance. Have you ever met a Financial Advisor? They're very serious. Which is good, serious when it comes to our money is in our best interest. But when my husband told her he didn't want to talk about life insurance because his wife falls asleep listening to "How to Murder Your Husband" she did not think it was funny! Yikes! Things definitely got weird! I had to use every ounce of my self control to not fall on the floor laughing! And we both cracked up about it when we left! I'm still not sure if she's concerned about my husband's well being despite me assuring her I just like to listen to true crime and that I am not planning a crime myself.
So tell me, what's your favorite true crime documentary or podcast? Because I KNOW you have one!! Until next time, freaks. ;-)
